Anthony L. “Tony” Marotti, Sr., 79, of Bellefontaine, passed away on July 8, 2015, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Born on Sept. 7, 1935 in Ambridge, Pa., Tony was a son of the late John and Pauline (Demarzio) Marotti. It was the U.S. Air Force that brought Tony to Bellefontaine — he served in the Philippines from 1953 to 1956 and was stationed at the A.C. & W. Aero Squadron in town.
On June 29, 1957 in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Bellefontaine, he married the former Mary Dolores Cira. Mary Dolores survives, along with their daughters, Gina L. (Tony) Waltzer, Gloria Marotti and Christina (Tony Robinson) Williams; and son, Anthony L. (Christy) Marotti II, all of Bellefontaine.
Tony became known in Bellefontaine for his skill behind the barber’s chair, and he had the accolades to back up his reputation. He graduated from the Pittsburg Barber School in 1960, and in 1978 obtained his manager’s license from the Ohio State University Cosmetology School in Lima. He owned his own businesses, first Mr. Anthony’s then Tony’s Barber Shop, for more than 50 years. To many he was “Tony the Barber,” even after he retired in 2014.
Tony sang often. So much so that his family used to call him Lala. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Bellefontaine, where he sang for years in the men’s choir, living up to that childhood nickname.
He served with the Executive Commission for the Logan County Democrats and Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree. He also enjoyed fishing, his Pittsburg Steelers and talking politics.
Tony was preceded in death by grandson Sean; sister, Joanne and three brothers, Michael, Eugene and Billy.
He is survived by grandchildren Nicholas Waltzer, Lucas Waltzer, Ryan (Chelsea) Maier, Alexandra Marotti and Michael Marotti; step grandchildren Garrett, Lacey and Weston Rose; great-grandchildren Jaslene, Terran, and Rae Lynn; sisters, Paulette (George) Schmetzer and Patty (Ray) Ligget, both of South Heights, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
