Carl Gray

Carl Piatt Gray passed peacefully on Sunday evening, November 13th, in the arms of his loving niece Jenny Proctor. He resided at Green Hills Care Center.

Carl was born on April 16, 1928 on the family farm settled by his great great grandfather Benjamin Piatt along the banks of the Macochee Stream east of West Liberty. Carl remained on this land through his youth and most of his adult life.

Carl spent much of his life farming the land upon which he was raised before retiring in Tucson, Arizona, in 1990 with his beloved wife Patricia. He was an avid camper, traveler, fisherman, and hunter, later giving up hunting to become a wildlife enthusiast. He and Patricia traveled all over the country, including several trips to Alaska, as well as Canada and later in life, Europe.

His wife Patricia preceded him death in 2011. He made it clear to his family that he wanted to return to his beloved Macochee Valley and moved to Green Hills Retirement Community in West Liberty within weeks of his wife’s death.

He is survived by his first wife, Charlotte Schiff of Yellow Springs, Ohio, and their son Carl (Toby) Gray of Santa Cruz, California, and his son with wife Patricia, Steven Gray, of San Francisco, California. Numerous nephews and nieces also survive him through his wife, Patricia, as well as many cousins and their descendants in his extended Piatt and Gray families.

Graveside services will be held at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty, where he will be laid to rest with his wife Patricia. All friends and family will be welcomed.

Carl’s family is especially grateful for the care given to him during his years in several of the living facilities at Green Hills.
