Charles E. Dunaway, 100, of East Liberty passed away at 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at his home. He was born in Kenton, Ohio on June 8, 1915 to the late George Edward and Anna (Van Hyning) Dunaway.
On June 21, 1941 Charles married Martha Lou Busic and she preceded him in death in February 2003. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Dunaway and siblings, Martha, Mary, Eleanor, Edward, and Dwight.
Charles is survived by a daughter, Joyce (Howard) Warner of Columbus, Ohio; a grandson, Todd (Jayn) Warner; two great grandchildren, Jenna and Jack Warner; a sister, Marguerite “Mickey” Oiler of Chillicothe, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
Charles was a 1933 graduate of Zanesfield High School and basketball player. He worked on the family farm until 1936, before going to work at Harding Machine. He worked there during World War II when it was converted to build primers and fuses for artillery. Charles retired as supervisor after 42 years. After retirement, he taught at the Ohio High Point JVS. Charles was on the Perry Township Board of Zoning and helped organize the East Liberty Fire Department following World War II where he served as Volunteer Fire Chief for many years. He loved traveling by train and took trips to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Charles also enjoyed anything dealing with automobiles, he even made sure to renew his driver’s license on his 100th birthday. At his time of death, he still owned three automobiles. The Zanesfield Community gave Charles the great honor on his 100th Birthday of declaring June 8th “Charles E. Dunaway Day.”
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 25, 2015 from 4-6 p.m. at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 321 N. Main Street, Bellefontaine, Ohio. Pastor Linda Dulin-Moore will officiate a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at the East Liberty United Methodist Church, 2392 Main Street, East Liberty, Ohio. Burial will be in East Liberty Cemetery in East Liberty, Ohio.
