Charles A. Himes, 85, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away early Sunday, February 19, 2012, at Green Hills Care Center in West Liberty, Ohio. He was born November 30, 1926 in Bellefontaine, the son of the late, George A. Himes and Irene (Richardson) Himes Hare.
His loving wife, Janet Ruth Himes, whom he married in February of 1947 in Covington, Kentucky, preceded him in death December 20, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Jane Nichols September 26, 2010, and his stepfather John Hare.
He is survived by his daughter, Christine (Dr. Thomas) Darrah of Bellefontaine; four grandchildren, Matthew (Emily) Nichols of South Bend, Indiana, Dr. Joel Darrah of Wilmington, North Carolina, Meghan (Donnie) Frazier and Emily (Eric) Green both of Columbus, Ohio; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Frazier, and a son-in-law, Terry Nichols of West Liberty.
He was a 1944 graduate of Bellefontaine High School and also a 1949 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. He served in the United States Army during World War II before coming back to Bellefontaine where he was a pharmacist for more than fifty years and was co-owner of Jamison’s Drug Store.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bellefontaine, the Masonic Lodge #209 F & AM in Bellefontaine, The Ohio State University Marching Band, The Ohio State University Chapter of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity, the West Central Ohio Community Concert Band, and served on the Logan County Landmark Preservation Board (Holland Theatre).
He was an avid lover of music and trains. He enjoyed singing in the church choir, barbershop chorus and quartets and playing his trombone. He was happiest when he was “riding the rails” where he toured the United States and Canada by train.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 25, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine with Gene Marine officiating. Calling hours are Friday, February 25, 2012, from 4 to 7 P.M. and also one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Interment will be at the Bellefontaine Cemetery in Bellefontaine with military honors provided by the Logan County Veteran Honor Guard.
