Charles Wesley Lyons, age 88, of Bellefontaine, Ohio passed away at 8:10 A.M. Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at his son’s residence surrounded by his family. He was born in Pontiac, Michigan June 16, 1929, to the late Shirley E. and Sarah E. (Williams) Lyons. Along with his parents a sister, Joy McDonald, preceded Charles in death.

He is survived by his wife of sixty two years, Doris (Link) Lyons of Bellefontaine, who he married November 20, 1954 in Dayton, Ohio; his son, David Mikhael (Cheryl) Lyons of Bellefontaine and two grandsons, Cody Scott Lyons and Nicklaus Payne Lyons. Charles was extremely proud of his grandsons and enjoyed watching them develop their talents.

Charles graduated from Bellefontaine High School in 1947. He went into the United States Navy and served four years. Charles attended parachute rigger school in Lakehurst, New Jersey and was a second-class parachute rigger. He was a crewmember and flew from San Francisco to Hawaii, Guam, Wake, Hatsuji, Japan, and returned to San Francisco.

Mr. Lyons received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Wittenberg University and a Master’s Degree from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He taught five years in Springfield. In 1962, he returned to Bellefontaine and taught sixth grade at Pine Avenue School. When Mr. Joe Daley moved to the new high school as principal in 1968, Mr. Lyons was appointed Assistant Principal to Mr. Daley. When Mr. Lynn, principal at Southeastern Elementary retired in 1963, Charles was appointed principal at Southeastern Elementary. He was there approximately thirteen years and was transferred to Western Elementary School where he retired.

After retirement, he was asked to be supervisor over the building and grounds for the Bellefontaine schools. He retired in 2002 after forty two years with the school district.  While superintendent of grounds, he took great pride in Dodds Field.

Charles was a fifty year member of the First United Methodist Church in Bellefontaine where he was very active. He taught Sunday school for many years and also shared teaching Aimwell class. Charles was a fifty year member of the Free and Accepted Masons. He was also co-founder for Warm Clothes for Kids at Western Schools.

Visitation will be held Sunday, August 27, 2017 from Noon to 4 P.M. at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Bellefontaine. Pastors Ben Shaeffer and Ed Beale will officiate the funeral service at 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 28, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Bellefontaine.

Burial will be at the Highland Memorial Cemetery in West Liberty, Ohio with military rites provided by the Logan County Veteran’s Honor Guard.

The funeral arrangements are in care of the staff of the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Bellefontaine.
