Chester A. Alspaugh, 92, of Rushsylvania, Ohio, passed away Friday, February 12, 2010 at 4:05 A.M. at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Fairfield County, Rushcreek Township, near Lancaster, Ohio May 5, 1917, a son of the late Alta L. and Loretta Milligan Alspaugh.
He married Helen L. Harshbarger August 23, 1937, in Winchester, Indiana, and she preceded him in death November 9, 2004. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Raymond, Loren “Larry” and Anson “Bud”; sisters, Ruby Cummins and Charlotte Grant; granddaughter, Mollie Shields; son-in-law, Richard Shoffner.
He is survived by daughters, Loretta Ann (Dan) LeVan, Carol Darlene Shields and Sandra Lee Shoffner, all of Bellefontaine, Ohio; a sister, Marcella Neeld; sisters-in-law, Ruth Alspaugh, Juanita “Dolly” Harshbarger and Marcella Neeld all of Bellefontaine; sixteen grandchildren and spouses; forty two great-grandchildren; twelve great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a lifetime farmer, a crane operator and had worked for the railroad. He was a member of the Church of The Brethren in Bellefontaine. He always said “I’m a wealthy man, I’m rich in family”. He enjoyed fishing, tractor pulling, coon hunting and his “toys.” He was known around town as “Candy Man”.
Calling hours are Monday, February 15, 2010, from 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine, where the funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at 11 A.M. with Pastor Fred Clogg and Rev. A. W. Purdin presiding. Burial will take place at the Rushsylvania Cemetery, Rushsylvania, Ohio
