David C. Legge, 73, of West Liberty passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2016 in Springfield Nursing & Independent Living Facility.
He was born on February 23, 1943 in Champaign County, the son of the late David Franklin and Amy Alberta (Barbee) Legge. He is also preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Detwiler.
On September 20, 1980 in West Liberty, he married the former Judy Plank and she survives along with children; Wes (Lisa) Legge of Bellefontaine, Doug (Nikki) Legge of West Liberty, Terri (Derrick) Fairchild of Vale, NC, John (Karrie) Detwiler of West Liberty, Jill (Andy) Stickley of Urbana, and Jenny (Lee) Pettit of Fletcher, 21 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, two sisters; Litha (James) Parker and Jackie (Mike) Schmidt, both of Urbana, an aunt, Inez Legge of West Liberty, a special friend, Jacob Vitt of West Liberty, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
David retired from Kelsey Hayes in Springfield where he worked as a machinist for 33 years. David also served as the West Liberty Street Superintendent for 14 years. He belonged to the Bellefontaine Men’s Bowling Association and American Bowling Congress. He had traveled to many national bowling events and tournaments and was the first in his family to roll a 300 game. He coached Little, Pony, and Acme youth baseball for many years including in 1978, his team went undefeated winning the Logan County title.
David was a long time member of the West Liberty United Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon, Usher, and Trustee. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and metal detecting. He liked to care for his fruit trees, picking raspberries and doing yard work. College sports were his favorite to watch on TV including football and basketball, but he loved to watch his grandchildren compete in youth sports and also watching West Liberty Salem High School sports.
Pastor Paul Forrey will officiate a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2016 at West Liberty United Church of Christ, 212 West Newell Street, West Liberty. Visitation will be held at the church on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Private burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty.
