David E. Wagner, 75, of Bellefontaine passed away Sunday, October 18, 2015 in Green Hills Care Center following a short illness. David was born April 10, 1940 in Bellefontaine and he died in Bellefontaine, seeing the world in between.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Viola (Lord) Wagner.
He is survived by his wife, Carole (Jackson) Wagner, whom he married on August 19, 1967 at the Zanesfield United Methodist Church, a sister, Janet Wagner of Pitsfield, Maine, a brother, Norman (Doris) Wagner of Bellefontaine, a sister-in-law, Dee Dee (Ron) Ricketts of Zanesfield, two nephews, Keith Wagner of California and Matt (Kim) Ricketts of Centerville, five nieces, Marcie Lawhon of Maine, Melinda Lloyd of Arkansas, Tess (Simon) Rhodes of Maine, Beth (Doug) Lantz of Bellefontaine, and Amy Ricketts of Zanesfield, great niece and nephew, Blake & Brittany Lantz, one aunt, June Little of Texas, one uncle, Warren Wagner of Shelby and two very dear friends, Ray Bernard of North Carolina and Carolyn Brinkman of Bellefontaine.
David was a 1958 graduate of Zanesfield-Monroe High School and soon after graduation, he joined the United States Airforce serving eight years which included his work in Security Service as an intelligence agent in Vietnam. He trained at Yale University where he became fluent in both the Korean and Chinese languages.
He was a former editor of the Bellefontaine Examiner from 1991 to 1997 and also worked as the public relations coordinator at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center and later he taught Chinese at Bellefontaine High School. He served on the Logan County Veteran Honor Guard for several years and was a lifetime member of the American Legion #173, Bellefontaine, where he had served as Past Commander. He was a dedicated volunteer of the Logan County History Center where he served as Past President and trustee. He and the late Mike Brinkman were instrumental in beginning the movement that allowed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be erected in Rutan Park in Bellefontaine.
Pastor Gene Phelps will officiate a memorial service promptly at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 16, 2015 in the Zanesfield United Methodist Church, 2880 Main St, Zanesfield, OH 43360. There is no visitation scheduled. Military rites will be conducted by the Logan County Veteran's Honor Guard.
