Dr. Robert W. Carter

Dr. Robert “Bob” W. Carter, 93, of Bellefontaine, passed away Wednesday evening, February 5, 2025, at Otterbein Green Hills Senior Life Community.

Bob was born in Washington, Pennsylvania, on November 8, 1931, to the late J. Harry and Adalaide (Andrews) Carter. He married Marlene K. Ealy on April 5, 1958, and she preceded him in death on June 28, 2021. Bob was also preceded in death by a son Robert S. Carter; and siblings: Jay Carter, James Carter, and Joan Kowalski.

Bob is survived by a son David A. Carter; daughter Michelle Carter Eades; 7 grandchildren (all of whom Bob was so proud of): Jessie Callahan, David Carter, Sarai Carter, Henry Carter, Gus Carter, Jack Eades, and Carter Eades; 3 great-grandchildren: Sloane, Brenner, and Boone; a brother, Jon Carter; and several nieces and nephews.

A veteran of the US Army, Bob served during the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart. After serving in the Army, he continued his education to eventually go on to get his Doctorate from The Ohio State University. During this time he was employed with the Columbus City Schools and was a leader in the desegregation of the school system in the 1950’s. After 21 years working in Columbus, Bob moved to Bellefontaine and was Superintendent of Bellefontaine City Schools from 1978 – 1993, only cancelling school one time, due to weather. He later started his own educational consulting business, working with schools across the country, during his second retirement. His experience in education led him to a close friendship with the president of Honda and was invited to Japan on several occasions. In his spare time, Bob enjoyed gardening on his “farm”, traveling with his wife, Mimi, and developing land.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 5-7pm at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Bellefontaine. Pastor Greg Menssen will officiate Bob’s funeral on Wednesday, February 12, at 11am at Bellefontaine First Presbyterian Church, 117 S. Main St. Bellefontaine, Ohio. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty, with military honors provided by members of the Logan County Veteran Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to be sent to a local teacher fund.
