Eddie Houston Coleman was born on February 1, 1938, in Mobile, Alabama, to Lee and Carrie Coleman. He was the fifth of seven siblings in the family. His early childhood was in Mobile, where he attended elementary and high school. Eddie was a fun-loving, bighearted person, one willing to give you the coat off his back, if needed. One of the highlights of his life was to become a radio announcer for WMOG, the first Black radio station in Mobile.

As a young teenager, Eddie was baptized into the Dearborn Street Seventh-day Adventist Church along with other members of his family. Following his graduation from high school, Eddie attended one year at Oakwood College (now Oakwood University) in preparation for the gospel ministry. While at Oakwood College, Eddie was a member of the Vibra Tones, a renown male singing group which traveled in the area singing hymns, spirituals, and old-fashioned gospel. When his educational finances were exhausted, he withdrew from school to join the United States Air Force. During this time Eddie learned to bowl, and he became an avid bowler playing in the local leagues.

While stationed at the air base near Bellefontaine, Ohio, he met the love of his life, Ephonia Mae Lewis, who was affectionately called Mazie. The two were married on February 13, 1959. To this union was born one son, Eddie Coleman, Jr., who preceded Eddie Sr. in death, along with Mazie.

Eddie leaves to mourn his passing: one brother, Henry Coleman (Esther); one sister, Autherine Higgs (Nathaniel); three grandchildren, Tyrone, Angel, and Haley; two great grandchildren, Takoda and Tevin; one daughter-in-law, Lisa Coleman, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other in-laws, and friends.

Dr. Nathaniel Higgs will officiate a funeral service, along with his brother, Henry “Bubba” Coleman, Rev. Frank McCollough, and Elder John Hall, on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 2:00pm in the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main St. Bellefontaine, OH 43311. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, 1 to 2pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in Bellefontaine Cemetery with military honors.
