Eleanor Reist Swartz, 94, of West Liberty, Ohio, passed away at 3:08 P.M. Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Green Hills Inn in West Liberty.
She was born in Scottsdale, Pennsylvania June 13, 1918, to the late Henry Frank and Lulu Greenwalt Reist. On December 20, 1939, she married Samuel Coffman Swartz, and he preceded her in death October 16, 2002.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Roth of West Liberty, Margaret (Cliff) Hensel of Arcanum, Ohio and Jan (Jim) Erb of Hesston, Kansas; three sons, Chuck (Jeanie) Swartz of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Keith (Emma) Swartz of Harrisonville, Missouri, and Karl (Myra) Swartz of Wichita, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Eleanor Shumaker. She was preceded in death by a grandson, J.C. Swartz; a sister, Maurine Finley; and a brother Robert Reist; and a son-in-law, Robert Roth.
A retired middle school English teacher, Eleanor was a member of Bethel Mennonite Church in West Liberty and was one of the original volunteers with Global Crafts. She was also an avid reader who enjoyed crossword puzzles and especially interacting with other people.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Bethel Mennonite Church in West Liberty with Pastor David Maurer and Pastor Paul Conrad officiating. Calling hours are Friday, September 14, 2012 from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Kauffman-Eichholtz Funeral Home in West Liberty and one hour prior to the funeral at the church. A committal service will be conducted in Philadelphia Cemetery in Union Township by Eleanor’s three sons.
Memorial contribution may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, Senior Independence Hospice or Green Hills Retirement Community.
The funeral arrangements were handled by the staff of the Kauffman-Eichholtz Funeral Home in West Liberty.
