Elgan Butler

Elgan Butler, 96, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at his residence.

He was born February 9, 1917 in Rowan County, Kentucky, to the late Andrew and Lottie (Smith) Butler. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Essie Engle and his brothers, Lester, Ersel, Daniel, Mason and Edger Butler.

Sixty-seven years ago he married the former Bessie Cooper on April 2, 1946 Maysville, Kentucky. She survives along with five sons, Jeffrey Butler, Gary (Phyllis) Butler, Carlos Butler, Roger (Rose) Butler and John “Jack” (Susan) Butler all of Bellefontaine; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A World War II Army Veteran, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his participation in the Normandy Invasion, and also received the Good Conduct Medal.

Elgan worked at National Extrusion in Bellefontaine for thirty two years retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Bellefontaine. He enjoyed gardening, being outside and his grandchildren. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Calling hours will be Friday, April 5, 2013 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine, where Pastor Brad Angus will officiate an 11:00 A.M. funeral service Saturday, April 6, 2013. Interment will follow the funeral service at the Highland Memorial Cemetery in West Liberty, Ohio with military honors provided by the Logan County Honor Guard.
