Emerson L. Brown, 95, of Bellefontaine, passed away Friday, February 14, 2025, at Logan Acres Care Center.
Emerson was born in Lewisburg, Ohio, on October 29, 1929, to the late Harold and Grace (Hunt) Brown. He married Lucy C. Kerr on May 29, 1954, and she preceded him in death on July 10, 2016. Emerson was also preceded in death by his sister Leola Crowell.
Emerson is survived by his wife, Marietta Huffman Brown, whom he married on April 4, 2024; 2 sons: Christopher Dean (Gloria) Brown of Belmont, Michigan, and Aaron Brown of Dyer, Indiana; 4 grandchildren: Rachel (Todd) Carpenter, Kevin (Chelsea) Brown, Matthew (Sarah) Brown, and Michelle Brown; 9 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews: Lee (Bonita) Crowell, Raine (Terry) Longfellow, Lew (Mary) Crowell, Les Crowell, Lyle (Karen) Crowell, Linda Mcglothlin, and Lavena (Patrick) Marker.
Emerson was a 1947 graduate of New Madison High School. He graduated with a bachelor's degree and master’s degree from Miami University, where he played on the baseball team for 4 years and was a member of Sigma Phil Epsilon fraternity. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He initially taught Math, Science, and Phys. Ed. at Mason High School in the Cincinnati area and then became their Principal, and their Athletic Director for one year. In 1968, Emerson moved to Logan County and became the Superintendent at West Liberty-Salem School District and took it upon himself to re-charge some of the athletic programs. He was an outstanding supporter of West Liberty-Salem schools, student athletes, and coaches, and retired in 1984. Emerson was inducted into the West Liberty-Salem Hall of Fame in 2017. He was President of the OHSAA Board of Control in 1971, and was an OHSAA SW District representative for many years. He was recognized in 2007 and 2008 as an inductee into the Mason High School Hall of Fame and the Mason Athletic Boosters Hall of Fame respectively. Emerson was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Bellefontaine.
Friends may call on Friday, February 21, 2025, from 11am until 1pm at Calvary Baptist Church, 1140 Rush Ave. Bellefontaine, where Pastor Jeff Willetts will officiate Emerson’s funeral at 1pm. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery, West Liberty, with military honors provided by members of the Logan County Veteran Honor Guard.
