Harley Allen Swaney, 80, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, formerly of Tulare, South Dakota, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Harley was born March 1, 1932, to Lloyd and Lulu (Brummett) Swaney in South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents, his oldest brother while an infant, and a sister-in-law.
Harley married Shirley Ost in May of 1953, and she survives along with his sons, Douglas (Betsy) Swaney and Robert (Lynn) Swaney, and two daughters, Cathy (Jeff) Willetts and Karen (John) Barlow. He was blessed by 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 4 brothers and 1 sister.
After a time in the Air Force, Harley and his wife farmed in Spink County, South Dakota, for over twenty years. They then purchased and operated the Tulare Hardware store for fifteen years. In October of 2000, they moved to Bellefontaine, Ohio, where he worked for Lowe’s for twelve more years.
For many years, he served faithfully in his church, his local school board, the local American Farm Bureau, Lion’s Club, and youth baseball team. After moving to Ohio, he enjoyed writing his remembrances as a legacy to his family. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, woodworking, genealogy, traveling, and various collections.
The funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, September 29, 2012, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Bellefontaine with Pastor Jeff Willetts officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. prior to the service at the church.
