Henry D. Bates, 72, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away Friday, June 8, 2012 at his home.
He was born October 10, 1939 in Newcomb, Tennessee, a son of the late John and Sylvania (Perry) Bates.
On July 22, 1975 in Bellefontaine, he married the former Dorothy LeMaster Vanover Bates and she preceded him in death August 7, 2000. He was also preceded in death by a step-daughter, Patricia Barber, a step-son, Richard Vanover, a brother, John Bates and two sisters, Joanne Cory and Cynthia Davis.
Survivors include a step-son, Michael (Carolyn) Vanover of Bellefontaine; grandchildren, Colt Vanover, Donnie Vanover, Adam Vanover, Michael Vanover and Bobby Barber; 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, George (Nancy) Bates of Corbin, Kentucky; sisters, Bobbie (Jessie) Perkins of Germantown, Ohio, and Elsie (John) Crawford of Jellico, Tennessee and several nieces and nephews.
He retired in 2004 after thirty five years with Thomas & Marker Construction in Bellefontaine and was a school crossing guard who enjoyed working outside.
Pastor Bryan Meadows will conduct a graveside service Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 11 A.M. at the Huntsville Cemetery in Huntsville, Ohio.
The staff of the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine assisted the family with the arrangements.
