J. Warren “Jack” Yoder, 94, of West Liberty, Ohio, passed away Friday, August 9, 2013 at Green Hills Community in West Liberty.
He was born May 10, 1919, in Champaign County Ohio, a son of the late Dan C. and Maude (Allgyer) Yoder. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva Hartzler and Marie King; two brothers, Dr. C. Richard Yoder and Dan J. Yoder; his step-mother, Belle Stoltzfus Yoder and four nephews.
On January 23, 1948, he married Ruth Weber and she survives along with sons, Edward (Jan) Yoder of Toronto, Ontario, Keith (Mary Claire) Yoder of Atlanta, Georgia and Karl Yoder of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, Bill, Shawn, Elisha, Lindsay, Luke, Rebecca, Benjamin; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Everett Yoder of West Liberty and many nieces and nephews.
A 1937 graduate of Salem High School, he also attended Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana for one year. He then returned to West Liberty to work on the home farm. In 1942, he farmed for a brother-in-law for one year.
In 1945, he joined a group of cattle tenders on a large ship sponsored by the Brethren Service Committee to take 373 Holstein heifers to Poland. Following that trip he worked for Carl Grey Sr. who bought Canadian Holsteins and had cattle sales. Jack became interested in dairy cattle. Farming for Jack’s generation involved many changes. As a boy growing up, he remembers mules and horses being replaced by tractors, cows being milked by machine, hay making, planting and harvesting methods changing. No more silo filling and threshing neighborhood crews.
In 1948 Jack and his wife moved into the home farm, and lived there with their sons for fifty two years.
He was an active member of the Mennonite Church, growing up with his family at Oak Grove. In 1948, he became a member of the Bethel Mennonite Church.
Pastor David Maurer will officiate a memorial service at a later date.
A private burial service will be held at a later date at the Fairview Cemetery in West Liberty.
The staff of the Eichholtz Daring and Sanford Funeral Home in West Liberty assisted the family with the arrangements.
