James K. Cox, 75, of Quincy, passed away peacefully at 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at his home. He was born in Sidney, Ohio on November 21, 1946, a son of the late Marvin and Velda (Valentine) Cox.
On September 10, 1967, Jim married Cynthia (Nye) Cox in Upper Sandusky, Ohio and she survives, along with their daughter, Kristin (Nathan) Knight; son, Jeff (Barbara) Cox; five grandchildren, Samuel (Kelsie) Knight, Tyler Knight, Andrew Knight, Ethan Cox, and Trevor Cox; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by an infant son, Eric Cox; and two sisters, Marcia Kreglow, and Rebecca Reeder.
A graduate of Riverside High School and The Ohio State University, Jim spent his career as a public servant. He started his career as a bridge engineer at ODOT District 7 where he worked for 19 years. He then took the position of Chief Deputy Engineer at the Logan County Engineer’s Office in 1988, and served as the Logan County Engineer from 1993 to 2001. His accomplishments at the Logan County Engineer’s Office included passage of a sales tax to fund road and bridge improvements in Logan County and restoration of the McColly and Bickham covered bridges. He also served as the Director of the Logan- Union-Champaign Regional Planning Commission, police chief for the Village of Quincy, in the Ohio National Guard and on the Riverside School Board.
Jim loved his family and loved spending time with his grandsons. He was at every game or activity they were involved in and was their biggest fan. He also enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, often sharing these gifts with his church family and friends. Jim served on several mission trips through the Middleburg United Methodist Church and volunteered for many church activities including leading the apple dumpling gang with his wife Cindy and working the Logan County Fair gate to raise funds for mission projects. He especially enjoyed the time spent with his family at their lot on the Miami River teaching his children and grandchildren to water ski and tube.
A visitation will be from 12 -2 p.m. on Monday, November 14, 2022, at the Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 210 W. Hayes Street in DeGraff, where a memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Quincy, Ohio at a later date.
