Jan A. Sponsler, 73, of Bellefontaine, a beloved son, brother, cousin and friend, passed away at his residence on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 6:00pm.

He was born on January 17, 1952, in Bellefontaine, and was preceded in death by his father, Joseph O. Sponsler and brothers Greg and Bart Sponsler.

Jan is survived by his loving mother, Edna M. Sponsler of Bellefontaine, OH. He was overjoyed to celebrate her 100th birthday with her on May 18, 2024. Jan is also survived by his best friend, he referred to as “brother”, Hoss (Lori) Andrews of Bellefontaine. Jan and Hoss enjoyed many years of wonderful brotherhood, with Hoss being his primary caregiver when he fell ill.

Jan is also survived by cousins Steve (Debbie) Irish of Edmund, OK. Diane (Mike) Stokes of Zanesfield, OH. Melanie Irish of Bellefontaine, OH, Phillip (Bonnie) Sponsler of Findlay, OH. Jay (Bonnie) Sponsler of Dunkirk, OH. John (Stephanie) Sponsler of Findlay, OH. Steve (Vivian) Wolford of Columbus, OH. Brett (Valerie) Wolford of Green, OH and Brian (Jennifer) Barlup of Bexley, OH and Cindy Barlup of Columbus, OH.

Jan was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to 1972, serving his country in the Vietnam War. He wore his dog tags with honor from the time of his enlistment until the day of his passing.

Jan was also a lifelong Corvette enthusiast; his garage was never empty. He recently shared a story about his prized 1967 Lyndale Blue Corvette with cousins Brian and Cindy, “your Dad and I were out doing a test run in the race car, when we turned the corner on your street you two little squirts were using the windshield and hood as a slide, when we pulled up your Dad jumped out and started yelling and chasing after you… I caught him before he whooped your butts! There was no damage to the car and you kids were just having fun! You did learn a great lesson that day!” Followed by that unique Sponsler laughter. That was Jan, love first, always.

Jan’s wish was to have no formal funeral or graveside service.
