John Edwin “Ed” Herring, 80, of McComb, passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 10, 2020, at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay.
Ed was born in Bellefontaine on October 4, 1940, to William G. and Mary Lu (Ricks) Herring Meyer. He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie (Ewing) Herring, brother Kenneth V. Herring, sister-in-law Liz Herring, son-in-law Jim Snapp, and step-son Brian Monroe.
A 1958 graduate of Belle Center High School, Ed served in the Ohio National Guard. He retired after 46 years as a truck driver, having driven 5 million accident-free miles. He also worked in maintenance for Shady Acres Golf Course in McComb and was a substitute bus driver for the McComb Schools for many years. Ed would drive special trips for the schools, including annual trips to Cedar Point, much to the delight of the students. Ed was a member of the Indian Lake Moose and Eagles, and the McComb VFW. Ed also was a car transporter for Findlay Chrysler for several years. He enjoyed golfing, camping, traveling, and wintering in Florida. In his younger years, Ed was the Fire Chief for Roundhead and Belle Center fire departments, and had been a scout leader for the Belle Center Boy Scouts.
Ed is survived by his children: Christina Kay Snapp of Bellefontaine, Jeffrey Lee (Lori) Herring of Lakeview, James Edwin (Sherri) Herring of Botkins, and Jay Allen Herring of Tennessee; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers William “Joe” (Ruth) Herring of Bellefontaine and Robert S. Herring of Sidney; the mother of his children Lois Thaxton Ruble of Bellefontaine; step-sons: Mike Thompson of Ridgeway, Mark Thompson of Roundhead, Joe Thompson of Toledo, and Jenny Monroe of Colorado; numerous nieces and nephews; his significant other for 25-plus years, Genny Wilgus Funk of McComb; and her children: Greg (Polly) Shannon of McComb, and Stephanie Shannon of McComb.
Family graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2020, at Huntsville Cemetery, at 11am, with Blake Kenner officiating. Please be symptom-free, practice social distancing, and wear a mask. A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at a later date.
