John Wolfe M.D.

John Moore Wolfe, M.D., was born on February 2, 1925 in DeGraff, Ohio, to Daniel and Mary Wolfe. He passed away in Seattle, Washington on October 4, 2016. He was 91 and proud of having lived a long and healthy life. John was predeceased by his wife, Carol, and son, Daniel Eric.

He graduated from DeGraff High School in 1943 and was immediately drafted into the United States Army. Upon discharge he attended Wittenberg University, followed by the University Of Cincinnati School Of Medicine.

John began his medical career in West Liberty, Ohio as a general practitioner but in 1960 entered an anesthesia residency program at The Ohio State University. In 1961 he and his family moved to Seattle, Washington where he completed his anesthesia training at the University of Washington Medical School. Thereafter, he practiced medicine as an anesthesiologist in Marion, Ohio, Seattle, Washington, Phoenix and Sun City, Arizona, Tacoma, Washington (at Madigan Army Hospital after re-enlisting at age 56 and being commissioned as a Lt. Colonel ) and various other communities throughout the United States while serving as a locum tenans physician. Throughout his medical career, Dr. Wolfe loved being a physician, believing he was able to help others while maintaining his intellectual alertness and curiosity by doing so.

During his younger years, John was an avid outdoorsman, regularly taking his family camping, fishing and hiking throughout upper Michigan, the Pacific Northwest and other western states. John loved to travel. He drove through all forty-eight of the lower United States (travelling multiple times to most of these states) and made several voyages to Alaska and Hawaii. His most recent “road-trip” occurred in July when he and his grandson drove from Arizona to Ohio, and back. He traveled extensively overseas, including trips to China, Northern and Western Europe, and Scandinavia as well as a two month “around-the-world” cruise where he visited Australia, Indonesia, South East Asia, the Suez Canal and countries bordering the Mediterranean Ocean. Having traveled extensively and spoken to people in many countries, he was proud to be an American and firmly believed that the United States provided people with the greatest personal freedoms and opportunity to succeed.

John is survived by his son, John Winn Wolfe, granddaughters Shannah Hewitt and Noele Wolfe, grandson John-Paul Wolfe, two great-grandchildren, Carson and Audrey Hewitt (all from Seattle), his sister Lucy Ann Straka (Columbus, Ohio), nieces Mary Ann Schrote (Seattle) and Joanne Rosenberg (Columbus, Ohio), and nephew Jim Straka (Atlanta).

A visitation will be held between 4:30-6:30 pm on Friday, October 14 at the Daring and Sanford Funeral Home in Degraff, 210 Hayes St, De Graff, OH 43318. A graveside service will be held at 10 am, Saturday, October 15 at Greenwood-Union Cemetery, DeGraff.
