Joseph A. Bowden, 73, of Bellefontaine, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.
He was born on January 8, 1942 in Knoxville, Tennessee to the late Joseph E. and Laura (Hudgens) Bowden.
On June 16, 1967 in North Carolina, he married the former Ruth Allen and she survives along with their daughter, Lauren (David) Bowden Thomas of Columbus; a sister, Barbara Armstrong of Chattanooga, Tennessee; nieces, Nancy Armstrong of St. Augustine, Florida and Sally (David) Cook of Hixson, Tennessee; a cousin, Mike (Francie) Thomas of Nashville, Tennessee and several great nieces & nephews.
Joe graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College, where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bellefontaine, a 32nd degree Mason both in the York and Scottish Rites and belonged to the F&AM Bellefontaine Lodge #209.
Upon his move to the area, he initially worked as a controller for the H.K. Porter Company, Bellefontaine and then went to work for Transportation Research Company (TRC), East Liberty. Upon early retirement in 1992, he purchased the former Car World in Bellefontaine which later became Bowden Motors. His true passion was working in the automobile business.
Pastor Rob Fulton will officiate an 11:00 a.m. memorial service on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 321 North Main Street, Bellefontaine where friends may call on Friday, October 30, 2015 from 4 to 7 p.m. Inurnment will take place in Lenoir City, Tennessee at a later date.
