Leon Jay “Pinky” Kerns, 89, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Green Hills Community in West Liberty, Ohio.

He was born in Bellefontaine October 3, 1923, to the late Ray and Evalina (Beightler) Kerns.

On April 7, 1946, he married the former Jean Alice Morningstar in Lima, Ohio. She survives along with their children, Linda (Jim) Hilliker of Bellefontaine, Tom (Bertie) Kerns of Springfield, Tennessee and Susan (Rodney) Allen of Bellefontaine; grandchildren, Tiffany (Shawn) Wilcoxon, Britt (Jim) Gravley, Cody (Dana) Allen, Heath Allen and his fiancé, Jackie Hanson, Morgan Allen, Hannah (Ben) Jernigan, and Matt Kerns; great grandchildren, Maggie Wilcoxon, Mac and Hayden Gravley and Braidynn, Albert Benjamin and Asher Thomas Jernigan, and a sister, Goldie Watkins.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Annabelle and brother-in-law, George Boblitt; a brother, Merlin and sister-in-law, Betty Jo Kerns, and a brother-in-law, Carroll Watkins.

He worked at A. J. Millers, Dinovo’s and Notestine’s Flooring until retirement. He was an avid bowler and was inducted into the T.P. Lanes of Bellefontaine Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He then took up golf with the same enthusiasm.

He was a veteran of World War II having served from January 1943 through January 1946. He began attending The Ohio State University football games before World War II and continued attending with his wife Jean, on his return in 1946, both, in state and out, with family and friends until both were no longer physically able. Their loyalty to and interest in Ohio State and their teams is legendary.

They enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and to many countries through the years also with family and friends.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Bellefontaine, the American Legion Post #173, the Bellefontaine Elks and the V.F.W. Frank D. Castle Post #1080.

An 11:00 A.M. memorial service will be Monday, June 24, 2013, at the First Lutheran Church in Bellefontaine with Pastor Jonathon Bull officiating. Interment will follow the memorial service at the Bellefontaine Cemetery in Bellefontaine with a Military Service by the Logan County Veterans Honor Guard.
