Lewis E. Hughes, age 87, of Belle Center, Ohio, passed away Tuesday morning, September 23, 2014 at his home.
He was born in Logan County Ohio August 31, 1927, to the late Abraham Fulton and Velzetta Blanche (Fillinger) Hughes. Louie was also preceded in death by a son, Lewis “Skip” Hughes who was killed in Viet Nam in 1970, his wife, Judy K. (McElroy) Hughes and his brother, Duane Hughes.
Louie is survived by his children, Holly (George) Hefner of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Lori (Brian) Fisher of Huntsville, Ohio and Michael P. Bozman of Columbus, Ohio; fifteen grandchildren, Ron (Melissa) Troyer of Stephen City, Virginia, Renae (Corey) Van Hoose of Zanesfield, Ohio, Randi (Wade) Thomas of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Rob (Lindsay) Troyer of Pinckney, Michigan, Christina (Brian) Myers of Lakeview, Ohio, Jesse (Kalisha) Hefner of Bellefontaine, Ashley (Tom) Nolan of Palmyra, Virginia, Justin Widmark of Lakeview, Ohio, Megan (Tommy) Carlson of Yukota AFB in Japan, Nathan (Meghan) Bozman of Germany, Alaina Bozman of Quincy, Ohio, Zachary Bozman of Minot AFB in North Dakota, Jacob Bozman, Michael I. Bozman and Faith Bozman, all of northern Ohio; fourteen great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; two great-great-granddaughters; a sister, Vivian (Ralph) Stokes of Port Orange, Florida; nephews, Cliff Stokes, Steve Stokes and Kevin Hughes and a niece, Becky Dorman.
Louie was a 1945 graduate of Belle Center High School. Following graduation, he joined the United States Navy and serving during World War II. He returned to Logan County and went to work for J.E. Turner CPA in 1947 through the Veteran’s On The Job Training program. In 1954, he went out on his own and opened an accounting firm in Belle Center where he worked until 1995 when he semi-retired and sold the business to Robert Pollock, CPA. Louie served forty years as Richland Township clerk and was also the Superintendent of Belle Center income tax and clerk for the BMRT Ambulance District.
Louie coached Pony League and Junior Legion baseball for sixteen years. He also raised and raced Standardbred race horses for twenty five years and was active in the Ohio Harness Horseman’s Association and a member of the USTA.
Louie spent winters in Betmar Acres Retirement Community in Zephyrhills, Florida and served eleven years on the Betmar Board of Directors as manager of finances, and six years as Chairman of the Board. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Senior League at Cherokee Hills and Betmar Acres in Florida. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, a life-member of the AmVets and former member of the Satan’s Angels Drum and Bugle Corps. He leaves many friends in Ohio and Florida.
Calling hours will be held at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home in Belle Center Friday, September 26, 2014 from 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. Pastor Dean Wasson will officiate the funeral service Saturday, September 27, 2014, at the Belle Center Church of Christ at 11 A.M. Interment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Belle Center with military honors provided by the Logan County Veteran's Honor Guard.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Betmar Acres Retirement Community in Zephyrhills, Florida.
