Madelyn R. Johns of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away Sunday, October 12, 2008, at her residence. She was born in Palmyra, New York, a daughter of the late Frank and Katherine Carey Ryan. She also was preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Edward Ryan, and sisters, Bernice Ottley and Frances Weyneth.
On June 25, 1949, she married Richard Johns in Palmyra and he survives, along with sons, Thomas (Kathleen) Johns of Sodus Point, New York, Stephen (Debra) Johns of Prattsburg, New York, and Robert (Laurie) Johns of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; daughter, Patricia (Richard) Hamm of Galloway; grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, Elizabeth, Benjamin (Andrea), Paige, Joseph and Peter Johns, Emily Stiles, Katherine Ryan and Stephanie Hamm; great-grandchild, Madelyn Stiles; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
For 32 years, she was a dental assistant for Bill Coate’s Dental Lab. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and her devotion to her Catholic faith as a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where she served the St. Vincent de Paul Society and was involved with the RCIA program. She also volunteered for Our Daily Bread for a number of years and was a swim instructor for the spa. She loved to paint, play bridge, write letters to family and friends, and was a very active fan of her grandchildren’s sports.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine. Rev. Patrick Sheridan conducts the funeral service at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 16, 2008, at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Bellefontaine. Burial is at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Palmyra, New York.
