Martha Jean Thomas, 89, of Rushsylvania, passed away at 12:32 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at her daughter’s residence in Rushsylvania, surrounded by her family. She was born in Richwood, Ohio on July 10, 1926 to the late Delbert and Margaret Zelma (Eddy) Herd. On March 13, 1962 she married Joseph Thomas and he preceded her in death on September 2, 1993. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a grandson, two granddaughters, and her brother, Robert N. Herd.
She is survived by her eight children, Carol Curtis of Belle Center, Betty Pitcock of Bellefontaine, Susan (Thomas) Kimbrell of Largo, Florida, Judy Wirick of Rushsylvania, Charlene (Larry) Crapnell of Bellefontaine, Darlene (Michael) Newson of Richwood, Kelly (Dennis) Kelly of Ridgeway, and Charles W. Wirick of Rushsylvania; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-seven great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Dwight Herd of Wilmington, Delaware and Charles “Butch” Herd of Zellwood, Florida; six sisters, Maxine Wirick of Michigan, Pat Edwards of Zanesfield, Juanita Ely of Bellefontaine, Rose Shape of Bellefontaine, Ruth Tallman of Nebraska, and Janet Watkins of Bellefontaine; and many nieces and nephews.
Martha worked as a homemaker as well as a babysitter for a large number of Rushsylvania children over the years. Martha loved to get together on Sundays for family meals and the time spent together as family.
Pastor Lynn Cleaveland will officiate a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Rushsylvania Church of Christ, 170 East Mill Street, Rushsylvania, Ohio 43347. Visitation will be Friday, August 7, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Rushsylvania Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home in Bellefontaine.
