Mary Jane Glett, a long-time resident of the Bellefontaine area, died peacefully at 9:35 AM on Monday, August 27th, 2018 at her residence in Bellefontaine, Ohio, ending her 92-year journey on earth and entering into the presence of her Lord Jesus Christ.
She was born on March 17, 1926 in Auglaize County, the daughter of Otto and Luella (Ambos) McGowan. She graduated from Jackson Center High School in 1944, then moved to Sidney where she worked at Montgomery Ward. In December of 1948 she married Harry Glett, Jr who preceded her in death in 2008.
Mary was also preceded in death by all 6 of her siblings: Eldon McGowan, Kathryn Waltz, Ruby Nell Woolley, Fredrick McGowan, Louise Egbert, and Ralph McGowan. She is survived by her four sons, Ron (Linda) Glett of New Carlisle, Bryan (Sabrina) Glett of Bellefontaine, Brooks (Mariane) Glett of Cincinnati, and Braden (Sharon) Glett of New Carlisle, 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, Mary (Steenrod) McGowan, Pat (Burden) McGowan, and Donna (Cowhick) Glett, along with many nieces and nephews.
Mary was a wise, conscientious, hard worker her entire life, earning accolades from all who worked with her. As a faithful farm wife and mother of four boys, she labored alongside Harry, unafraid to dirty her hands in any kind of work. In the 1960’s she took a job at Uhlman’s Department Store in Bellefontaine, then later at the Logan County Department of Human Services, from where she retired in 1986. For Mary, retirement had nothing to do with idleness, but instead afforded new opportunities to fulfill her passion to help others. An active member of First Lutheran Church in Bellefontaine, Mary lived out her faith in tangible ways, giving generously of her time, wisdom and resources to bless many. In addition, she served for many years on the board of Lutheran Community Services. Even into her late 80’s, Mary sometimes transported elderly friends to medical appointments, a service which she joyfully referred to as “Driving Miss Daisy”. Always an avid learner, she kept up on current events and pored over the Wall Street Journal daily. Mary impacted the lives of countless people throughout her journey on earth, and she is deeply missed by her family and many others.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at the First Lutheran Church in Bellefontaine, with a fellowship reception time of remembrance beginning at 10:30 a.m.
