Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Hughes, 99, passed away Friday, January 16, 2015 at Main Street Care Center, Avon Lake.
Betty was born in North Dakota on August 21, 1915 to the late Murray B. and Alberta L. Hoffman Griffith and lived the vast majority of her life as a Logan County resident. She married the late Wilbur E. Hughes on August 20, 1931 and he preceded her in death on November 11, 1992. Betty was also preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia “Pat” Folland on June 30, 2014, 3 sisters, Anna Pfaadt, Lillian Helmlinger and Lorraine Griffith and brother Charles Griffith.
Betty was a former 4-H Advisor, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bellefontaine and was a 50-year member of the Huntsville McArthur Grange. She was very supportive and active as First Lady in the Lions Club during Wilbur’s term as District Governor.
Betty is survived by her son William “Bill” (Kay) Hughes of Spring, Texas; a son in law, Robert Folland of Fredericktown; 6 grandchildren: Elizabeth Conley of Gahanna, Ohio, Robert C. Folland of Avon, Ohio, William W. Hughes of Alvin, TX, Robert E. Hughes of Grand Junction, CO, Susan Gay Hughes Fraley of Toledo, OH, Bradley S. Hughes of Concord, NC; 8 great-grandchildren: Annabelle Folland, Jackson Folland, Christopher Robert Folland, Isabelle Folland, William Hughes, Scott Henry Hughes, Thomas Hughes and John Hughes; 1 great-great-grandchild Jason Scott Hughes; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held April 25, 2015 at 11 A.M. at the Eichholtz Daring and Sanford Funeral Home in Bellefontaine with Pastor Rob Fulton officiating.
Private burial will be in Huntsville Cemetery.
