Norman “Norm” D. Thompson, 79, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009, at Heartland of Bellefontaine. He was born on October 30, 1929, in West Liberty, Ohio, the son of the late Herman S. and Oletha (Phillipe) Thompson. On August 4, 1952, he married the late Doris Jean (Kotsaris), who preceded him in death on December 31, 2008. He is also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Glen Thompson.
He is survived by a son, Jeff Thompson of Urbana, Ohio; two daughters, Gloria Thompson and Melody (Shannon) King, both of Bellefontaine; three brothers, Herman (Diane), Phil (Phyllis), and Robert “Bud” (Nancy) Thompson, all of Urbana; a sister, Roberta “Sis” (Arnold) Burnotte of Urbana; five grandchildren, Jason (Sarah), Matthew, Christopher Overholt, Nicholas Thompson, and Cheyenne Profitt, and three great grandchildren.
Norm was a 54 year member of the Free and Accepted Masons Mad River Lodge # 161 West Liberty, Ohio; Grand Council Royal & Select Masons of Ohio; Logan Council # 85, Super Excellent Master; Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of Ohio, Lafayette Chapter #60; Bellefontaine Commandery # 61, Knights Templar; Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Dayton, Ohio; Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Antioch Temple, Dayton, Ohio; Logan County Shrine Club; Logan County 32° Club; Champaign County Shrine Club; a member of the International Shrine Clown Association and the Great Lakes Shrine Clown Unit Association.
Norm “Boppo” Thompson was awarded the “Unsung Hero Award” in 1999 by the Great Lakes Shrine Clown Unit Association. He was also a Life Member of the Antioch Shrine Funster Clown Unit and was the Driver/Captain for the Unit for over 15 years. He was known as the “Fire Chief “of the Antioch Funster Clown Unit, after the trailer he was pulling in Canada caught fire. He also enjoyed restoring John Deere Tractors of all sizes. He worked as a boiler man at Monarch Tool & Die of Sidney, Ohio.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, May 29, 2009, at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine, with Pastor Mike Sandlin officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service in the Fairview Cemetery in West Liberty, Ohio. Visitation will be Thursday, May 28, 2009, at the funeral home from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., with a Masonic Service at 6:00 P.M.
