Paul Gustav Thurman, 83, of West Liberty, passed away at 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his family singing hymns. He was born in Willoughby, Ohio on August 11, 1932 to the late George Ferdinand and Bertha (Fey) Thurman.
On September 10, 1955, in Willoughby, Ohio, he married the former Carol Ann Arner and she survives.
He is also survived by his children; John (Pamela) Thurman, Dianne (David) Lary, Barbara (Dennis) Laman, Jane (Richard) Vargo, Jim (Kendra) Thurman, and Gretchen (Jeremy) Heater; 27 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and counting; sisters, Anne, Ruth, Evelyn; brother, George; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Paul was preceded in death by 3 brothers; Ferdinand, John, and Ernest; and 2 grandsons, Elijah and Samuel Heater.
A U.S. Army veteran, Paul served in Germany during the Korean Conflict in the 112th Combat Engineering Battalion. Paul retired after 35 years as a design engineer from Orbis in Urbana. He was a member of Grace Chapel Church and had a passion for Missions. Paul was a passionate flower gardener and his flower gardens had perpetual blooms throughout the year. Paul also enjoyed woodworking and playing with his grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at the Grace Chapel Church, 500 Linden Street, West Liberty with visitation prior to the service from 4 - 6 p.m.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home in West Liberty.
