Phyllip Jay Newman, 85, of Bellefontaine passed away Saturday, March 18, 2017 in Green Hills Care Center.

He was born in Bellefontaine on April 15, 1931, the son of the late Harry A. and Helen (Schrader) Newman. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Jennings and his twin brothers, Gene and Dean Newman.

On November 24, 1954, he married Patricia Ann “Pat” (Paxson) in Richmond, Indiana and she survives along with their children; Teresa Jo (David) Caudle of Pickerington, Ohio and Brian (Tangie) Newman of Urbana, four grandchildren; Ryan (Nick) Montgomery, Holly (Levi) King, Sean (Stephanie) Newman, and James Caudle, two step-grandchildren, Levi and Jason Runkle, eight great-grandchildren; Annabelle, Aiden, Kaden, Kylie, Kailyn, Damion, Trinidy, and Sean Jr., and a step great-grandchild, Macy, his twin sister, Phyllis Stephens of Englewood, Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

Phyl was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Bellefontaine, as was well as Elks Lodge #132 and American Legion Post #173, both in Bellefontaine. He worked at Sprint Telephone Company for 36 years before retiring and belonged to the Communication Workers of America Union.

He coached many of the Bellefontaine youth sports teams through the years and hosted many Organ Street sporting events with the neighborhood kids. He was an avid fan of the Bellefontaine Chieftains, Cincinnati Reds, and the Cleveland Browns.

Pastor Rose Michael will officiate a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, 2017 in the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main St. Bellefontaine and visitation will be on Wednesday, from 4 until 8 p.m. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Belle Center with military rites provided by the Logan County Veteran Honor Guard.

Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Bellefontaine assisted the family with arrangements.
