Dick Ortli died at home unexpectedly on Saturday, January 28, 2017. He was born in Cleveland to Harold S. and Marie Janosek Ortli on May 19, 1940. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half-sister, Patricia Ortli McAllister.
His is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia Gravatt Ortli and his son John (Julie) Ortli of Upper Arlington and daughter Diane (Bob) Raymond of Port Clinton. There are six grandchildren: Grant, Christopher, Marin, and Addison Raymond; Nicholas and Lauren Ortli.
Richard graduated from Parma High School and received a BA from Baldwin-Wallace College. He taught music in Ohio and Colorado where he received his MA from the University of Northern Colorado in school administration.
He served in the United States Coast Guard From 1958-1966. From 1965 – 1973, Dick and Pat lived in Colorado where their children were born.
Teaching music and elementary school led him back to Ohio to Logan County where he taught music at Ben Logan High School, 4th grade at West Mansfield and served as principal at the Belle Center School. His career was completed as the curriculum supervisor for the Logan County School System.
An avid reader and fisherman, Dick was also a gifted carpenter, building wonderful cabinets and hutches in addition to building the home in which they lived for many years. Hiking, camping, and traveling the United States, Canada, and Mexico consumed many summers days.
There will be a celebration of life at the Logan County History Center on March 3, 2017 from 3:00 - 6:00pm. The Logan County Veteran Honor Guard will conduct military honors at 5:45pm.
