Rita Ann Scherer, 64, of Bellefontaine, passed away at 9:20 p.m. on Friday, December 9, 2016 at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. She was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio on February 14, 1952 to the late Durward Odell and Peggy Jacqueline (Ricketts) Durnell.
On June 17, 1983 Rita married Donald Philip Scherer in Bellefontaine, Ohio, and he preceded her in death on August 4, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her brother, D. Michael Durnell.
Rita is survived by her three children, Maggie (Art) Hower, Larry Scherer, and Brian Scherer; eight grandchildren, Kenny, Ashley, Jasin, Joshua, Cody, Courtney, Justine, and Xavier; five great grandchildren, Kade, Lilyann, Kadence, Braylin, and Draden; three step-children; several step-grandchildren; three sisters, Tina Durnell, Lois Duncan, and Nancy (Tom) Pagnard; two brothers, Lanny (Linda) Durnell and John Durnell; and many special nieces and nephews.
A homemaker, Rita was the rock of her family. She had worked outside of her home as a real estate agent and cosmetologist, and was an avid collector of Gone with the Wind memorabilia. Her son, Larry, was blessed to have taken care of his mother during the last years of her life, during which time they watched Jeopardy and Rita’s favorite movie, Gone with the Wind.
Pastor Jeffory Willetts will officiate a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 321 N. Main Street, Bellefontaine, where the family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Huntsville Cemetery in Huntsville, Ohio.
