Robert E. Armstrong, age 96, of Holmes Beach, Florida and formerly of DeGraff, Ohio passed away at 8:15 P.M. Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Tidewell Hospice in Bradenton, Florida.
He was born in Rosewood, Ohio June 4, 1918, to the late Clarence E. and Mary Christine (Grove) Armstrong. On October 6, 1945, he married the former Carolyn Melhorn and she preceded him in death March 11, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Capitola Armstrong.
He is survived by his two sons, Richard (Gloria) Armstrong of DeGraff and Jerry (Darlene) Armstrong of DeBary, Florida; four grandchildren, Michelle (Patrick) Neer, David (Rebecca) Armstrong, Kisha Armstrong and Joe (Misty) Armstrong; six great grandchildren, Ashley Armstrong, Matthew and Lydia Armstrong, and Rosie, Renee and Rachel Neer; two step-great grandchildren, Tré Burnside and Devin Stallings; a special nephew, Don (Anita) Melhorn, and special friends Steve and Kathy Nogle.
A 1936 graduate of DeGraff High School, Robert taught the 1972-73 high school radio class. He also served as a school board member for twelve years. He and his wife then moved to Florida and operated Haley’s Motel until 1979. He formerly owned and operated the Armstrong & Kinnan Hardware Store and the Shopperette Newspaper, both in DeGraff. He had worked at the post office and was a HAM radio operator. Robert greatly enjoyed spending time visiting with his friends and he was very well known locally as an author and DeGraff historian.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, July 28, 2014, at the Daring & Sanford Funeral Home in DeGraff. Calling hours will be held Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 6 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home with a Masonic Service beginning at 7:45 P.M. Interment will be at the Greenwood-Union Cemetery in DeGraff.
The funeral arrangements were in the care of the staff of the Daring & Sanford Funeral Home in DeGraff.
