Robert A. Coffman, Jr., 88, of Huntsville, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, in the Indian Lake Rehabilitation Center, Lakeview, after a brave and courageous 14-year battle with cancer.
He was born in Lima, Ohio on February 3, 1936, the son of the late Robert A. and June (Williams) Coffman, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Barbara, a brother, Ronald Coffman and a son-in-law, Kevin Harris.
On October 15, 1988, he married Suzanne (Sherer) Coffman, and she survives in Huntsville.
He is also survived by his children, Robert Coffman III, Karen Coffman, Elaine Cozad, Lisa (John) Carr, Angelique Williams-Suarez, April Coffman, Christine (Tim) Ott, Laurie Harris, and Daniel (Stacy) Hughes, 28 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.
Robert enlisted in the National Guard in 1952, at the age of 17, with the permission of his father. A year later, at 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He served his country 22 years, including Korea and two tours in Vietnam, working in artillery, as a drill instructor, and help with illustrations for the USMC handbook. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for two years in Lima as a prison guard. He then went to work for the General Dynamics Abrams Tank Plant for 20 years where he spent much of his time as a painter.
After his second retirement, he spent much of his time as the Commander of the Huntsville American Legion, hand painting signs for many local businesses including the movie theater windows, and woodcarving. He was a longstanding member of the Huntsville Presbyterian Church
Rev. Ben Beres will officiate a funeral service at 1:00pm on Monday, December 30, 2024, in the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main St., Bellefontaine, Ohio 43311. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Huntsville Cemetery will military honors provided by United States Marine Corps.
