Russell R. Gatchell, age 88, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Logan Acres Care Center in Bellefontaine.
He was born September 23, 1926 in Dunkirk, Ohio, to the late Frank H. and Elfa Mae (Pemberton) Gatchell. He was also preceded in death by his former wife, Paula (Bazzle) Waner and his siblings, Avonelle Call and Donald Gatchell.
Surviving are his children, Tonya (Ron) Perry of Zanesfield, Ohio, Tom (Melody) Gatchel, Teresa Gatchell, both of Bellefontaine, and Tajana (Bryant) MacDonald of Leesburg, Florida; his grandchildren, Michele, Todd, Scott, Brandy, Brad, Jessica, Erik and Autumn; fifteen great grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Montgomery of Kenton, Ohio, and several nieces.
Russell was a very talented heavy equipment operator for Knowlton Construction and was well respected by his peers. He worked on many large projects, including buildings on the campuses of The Ohio State University, Central State, and Wright State University.
A World War II United States Army Veteran, Russell was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bellefontaine, the Masonic Lodge, Hilliker YMCA, and a forty year member of the Logan-airs Barbershop Chorus. He took two trips to the Holy Land and liked to watch and feed birds.
Russell was a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, but his most joy was to watch his grandchildren in all of their sports. Almost every Friday for the last twenty four years, Russell and his family had a standing 11:30 A.M. lunch date at Wendy’s in Bellefontaine.
Calling hours will be held Friday, November 14, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine. Pastor Ed Beale will officiate the funeral service at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Bellefontaine.
Interment will be at the Hueston Cemetery in Hardin County Ohio.
