Russell Helmlinger
Russell L. Helmlinger, 90, formerly of Jackson Center, Ohio, passed away Friday morning, December 20, 2013 at Elmwood Assisted Living in New Bremen, Ohio.
He was born in Shelby County Ohio December 19, 1923, to the late Michael and Selma (Weaver) Helmlinger. He was also preceded in death by three sisters Willa Holt, Velma Burean and Esther English.
Russ married the former Catherine Schnippel May 30, 1956, and she survives in New Bremen. Also surviving is a brother, Richard (Alma Mae) Helmlinger of Jackson Center, and many nieces and nephews.
Russ was a veteran of the United States Army, having served his country during World War II from 1943 – 1946 where he saw action in the European Theater with the 70th Infantry Division in the Field Artilliary in Nice, France to the Rhine River in Germany when the war ended. He started his teaching career at New Haven High School teaching Industrial Education. He later taught in Jackson Center, Sidney, Apollo JVS in Lima and Lehman High School for a total of thirty four years. Russ was also a carpenter and cabinet maker.
Russ was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Jackson Center. He was also a member of the American Legion – Scherer Post #493, VFW Post #3316, the Indian Lake AmVets and Moose Lodge.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 28, 2013 at 11 A.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Jackson Center, with Pastor Kent Hollis officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Military honors will be observed following the service at the church conducted by the American Legion – Scherer Post #493. A private family interment will take place at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Wapakoneta, Ohio.
The staff of the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home in Jackson Center assisted the family with the arrangements.
