Richard E. “Dick” Munz, 59, of Russells Point, Ohio, went Home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, August 29, 2010 in Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine, Ohio. He was born September 4, 1950 in Urbana, Ohio, the son of the late Robert W. and Hazel (Burns) Munz, Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Carola (Liggett) Munz, whom he married November 25, 1972 in Bellefontaine. He is also survived by his two daughters, Lt. Kristi (Eddie) Schmitt of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Ali Munz of Russells Point, Ohio; his brother, Butch (Billie) Munz of Bellefontaine and a sister, Bonnie (Phil) Vermillion of Galloway, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Connie Forsythe of Richwood, Ohio and Judy Coons of Bellefontaine and a brother-in-law, Gary (Alice) Liggett of Marysville, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was raised in Bellefontaine where he graduated from high school in 1968 and graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. In 1982, he received his Masters Degree in Business Administration from the National University in Sacramento, CA.
Major Munz was commissioned though the Air Force Reserves Officers’ Training Corps upon graduation from BGSU. His first assignment was with the Tactical Air Command C-130s in the Republic of the Philippines where he flew in the evacuation of Saigon. He later was stationed at Little Rock AFB where he was a Special Projects officer flying the most sensitive missions in the Pacific Theater.
He was a Flight Commander and instructor for the Navy students and Navy instructors, and then was an Assistant Operations Officer. He was later assigned to Hanscom AFB in Massachusetts as the Director of Logistics on several blackworld programs. In October of 1989, he was assigned to the AMRAAM Joint System Program Office at the Eglin AFB in Florida.
For his outstanding service, Major Munz was awarded several decorations including, Air Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Force Commendations Medal, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
He retired in 1993 from the Air Force and has worked at Honda of America in East Liberty for the past 9 and one half years.
Dick had done tremendous amounts of volunteer work and coaching youth sports including basketball, baseball, softball and soccer. He was a loving husband, father, and brother. In addition to his family, he leaves behind his military family, Pirates Cove family, BHS class of 1968, and his many friends from all around the world.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine with Chaplain Kendall Rogers officiating. Military Honors will be performed by the Wright-Patterson AFB Honor Guard. Calling hours are Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at the funeral home from 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M.
