Waldo A. Gilbert, 94, of Rushsylvania, Ohio, passed away at his residence Sunday, February 23, 2014.
He was born in Rushsylvania January 12, 1920, to the late James C. and Charlotte Belle (Ansley) Gilbert.
On November 22, 1945, he married Dorothy M. Ward at the Hopewell Church in Bellefontaine, and she preceded him in death August 9, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Wilda Reed, Ethel Abbott, Johnson E., Kenneth D., Wilbur J., George and Herbert Gilbert.
A 1940 graduate of Rushsylvania High School, Waldo entered the Army November 17, 1941, and served until he was honorably discharged January 1, 1945. He was in the Co. F 198 Inf. Div. 41st Div., serving thirty one months overseas in the Papuan and the New Guinea Campaigns. Waldo was one of the last surviving World War II Veterans of Logan County.
After returning from World War II, Waldo worked on the family farm for many years. He worked for the Department of Natural Resources at the Indian Lake State Park in the late 70’s to the mid 80’s. He and his wife tended the cemeteries in Rushcreek Township for thirteen and a half years. He was a member of the Charles J. Kimmel Jr. Post #722.
Although they had no children of their own, they had many devoted nieces and nephews.

Pastor Bryan Meadows will officiate the 1:00 P.M. funeral service Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the Eichholtz Funeral Home in Bellefontaine, where friends may call from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. prior to the service. Interment will be at the Highland Memorial Cemetery in West Liberty with a United States flag presentation by the Logan County Veterans Honor Guard.
