Wayne Akers
Wayne E. Akers, 93, formerly of Jackson Center, passed from this earthly life at Fair Haven, 2901 Fair Road, Sidney, Ohio on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 6:15 p.m. surrounded by his family.
He was born in Jackson Township, Shelby County on October 1, 1920 to the late John and Flossie (Hughes) Akers. He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Phillip Kossel. Wayne’s brother Charles, his wife Marie, his sister Wilma and her husband Hamer Kerns also preceded him in death.
Wayne’s first wife and his children’s mother was Ruth Ellen (Shoffner) Akers. They were married on December 7, 1945, and she passed on January 11, 1974. He then married Eva M. (Colley) Akers on September 20, 1975, and she passed on November 4, 1998. After both of them having lost their spouses, Wayne and his former sister-in-law Rose Evelyn (Shoffner) Fogt spent many years together and she passed on April 7, 2009. A granddaughter also preceded him in death.
Wayne is survived by his son Gerald W. “Jerry” (Fran) Akers and his daughter Judith E. (Thomas) Regula, all of Jackson Center. He is also survived by five grandsons; Daniel W. (Christy) Akers of Jackson Center, Steven M. (Nicole) Akers of Sidney, Matthew A. Akers of Sidney, Christopher L. (Amber) Regula of Jackson Center and Mark E. (Tracy) Regula of Wapakoneta; 12 great grandchildren, Maissen, Clay and Shia Akers, Michael (Hannah) Akers, Christina Akers, Wayne, Ashley and Alex Akers, Emma and Abigail Regula, and Marcey and Angela Regula.
Wayne graduated from Jackson Center High School in 1938 and participated in the basketball program. Jackson Center won the County Tournament in 1937 and was a runner-up in the 1938 Tournament.
Wayne received a draft notice and served his country for three years three months and three days. He served in Company A, 503 Military Police Battalion and guarded General George Patton.
After his military service, Wayne returned to Jackson Center and worked for Robert Painter Construction for over twenty-five years building homes in the surrounding area. In 1968 Wayne began work for Liberty Folder, which is now known as Baumfolder Corporation. He retired from there on December 29, 1988. After retiring, Wayne continued to work for Norm Stewart & Sons, Inc. and Reynolds Contractors in Lima where he lived from April of 1975 until 1999. Wayne continued to enjoy construction projects of all kinds for his family. He loved animals and always had a pet dog and enjoyed spoiling it. There was much anticipation awaiting the return of the humming birds so they could be fed and watched. He constructed a squirrel feeder and they came to the feeder immediately after it was filled. Wayne enjoyed many fishing trips to Michigan.
Pastor Kent Hollis will officiate the funeral service Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home in Jackson Center where friends may call Friday, January 24, 2014 from 4 to 8 P.M. Interment will be at the Glen Cemetery in Port Jefferson, Ohio.
