William A. “Bill” Oakley, 96, of Jackson Center, Ohio, passed away the morning of Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the Dayton VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio.
He was born in Shelby County Ohio July 23, 1917, to the late Wiley O. and Mamie L. (Copeland) Oakley. On September 16, 1938, he married the former Daisy C. Hengstler and she preceded him in death May 1, 1987. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Regula, Helen Zwiebel and Meryle Regula; and three brothers, Herbert E. Oakley, Russell L. Oakley and Roy Oakley.
He is survived by his daughter, Glytanna (John) Sloan of Jackson Center; a son, Marcus E. (Rena’) Oakley of St. Augustine, Florida; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; a brother, Emmett E. Oakley of Jackson Center, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill had worked as a carpenter for many years and retired from Airstream in Jackson Center. He was a United States Army WWII Veteran, who while serving in the Battle of the Bulge, was a captured German P.O.W. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Jackson Center and enjoyed bowling, woodworking and playing cards with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Pastor Kent Hollis will conduct the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Jackson Center. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be at the Glen Cemetery in Port Jefferson, Ohio.
The funeral arrangements were in the care of the staff of the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home in Jackson Center.
